In the Land of Wine, We Tasted Water

Leanne and Laura give us their take on Water Tasting at Lanzerac.

Alright, don’t panic - at Lanzerac there is plenty of wine to go around, don’t you worry. But what if I told you about a new and alternative tasting trend that the wine estate is proudly promoting?

I'll admit it – when I first heard about water tasting at a vineyard I was somewhat hesitant. Surely we’re there for the wine, right? After all, this is Stellenbosch, where world-class wine is practically a way of life. Surely everyone comes here to swirl, sniff and sip vintages, not... water?

Well yes, of course. But while wine tastings, cellar tours and wine pairings are prevalent as ever, Lanzerac has added an additional completely unique experience that… dare I say it? Blew me out of the water.

And that's exactly why this experience works.

Tucked away inside The Library at the historic Lanzerac estate lies South Africa's first dedicated fine water tasting room. Led by South Africa's first certified water sommelier, Nico Pieterse, the session quickly proves that water isn't simply ‘still or sparkling’.

Instead, you're taken on a fascinating journey through six different waters from around the world, each with its own personality, story and surprisingly distinctive flavour profile.

Who knew water could be silky? Or saline? Or have a crisp minerality that lingers on the palate?

It sounds a little bonkers at first – and yes, there are a few suspicious eyebrow raises before the first glass is poured – but within minutes everyone in the room is comparing notes just as enthusiastically as they would during a wine tasting.

Starting with three still waters from across the globe, the tasting itself is relaxed, interactive and genuinely entertaining. Rather than feeling overly technical, Nico explains how geology, mineral content and the source of the water all influence what you're tasting. Suddenly, terms like texture, mouthfeel and minerality make perfect sense, even without a drop of alcohol in sight.

Then it was onto the sparkling waters – and not since Finding Nemo has anyone been so fixated as I was on inspecting bubbles! Wine lovers take note – here you can have a cheeky tipple of red too, as one of the fascinating elements Nico explores is how to pair water with wine, and how the different water properties can affect the taste.

From a travel trade perspective, it's another example of how experiences are evolving to reflect changing consumer habits. As alcohol-free lifestyles become more mainstream and travellers pay closer attention to ingredients, a guided water tasting feels surprisingly current – offering guests something fresh, educational and entirely in tune with today's wellness trends. (Nico will even tell you how to read a water bottle label like Yuka or FoodSwitch!)

Of course, guests will still come for the exceptional wines, see the beautiful vineyards and taste the fantastic food. But experiences like this give destinations an extra layer – something unexpected that they'll talk about long after returning home.

Increasingly, experiential travel isn't about ticking off landmarks; it's about collecting stories. And "I went to a water tasting in South Africa" is certainly a conversation starter!

Water, Wine and Wellness - it’s all happening in South Africa

We take a look at what’s been happening at Lanzerac, Sala Beach House and Fairlawns in the recent months.

Lanzerac introduces luxury water tasting experiences:

Lanzerac, already a favourite in South African wine, has teamed up with The Fine Water Company to introduce something completely different — The Library, South Africa’s first fine water tasting room.

Yes, you read that right - water tasting!

The Library at Lanzerac

Tucked inside an elegant corner of the estate, this space invites guests to slow down and savour what’s usually overlooked: water. Becoming a new, luxury experience throughout Europe and the US - we are pleased to introduce this unique activity that highlights something normally seen as a necessity - being given the unexcepted attention and appreciation of nature’s ultimate pure hydration.

Guided by Nico Pieterse—one of only two certified water sommeliers in the country — the tastings explore the unique characteristics of six premium waters from around the world. 3 Still water tastings and 3 sparkling water tastings. A few of the waters that guests can expect to taste include: Denmark’s ISKLD, the lightly carbonated Perlaghe from Poland, Peru’s volcanic Socosani, and Armenia’s bold and mineral-rich Jermuk.

Of course, South Africa is represented too, with the locally bottled Mountain Falls.

Exquisite cuisine

Wine and Waves at Sala Beach House:

In June, Sala Beach House hosted two standout wine-and-food evenings that showcased the depth of South African winemaking alongside coastal cuisine.

The first, held on 4 June, featured Klein Constantia, a winery known for its cool-climate elegance. Guests enjoyed four signature wines, including the Blanc de Blanc 2020 and Estate Red Blend 2021, carefully paired with dishes like burrata macarons and truffle short rib—each designed by Executive Chef Shanal Ramroop to highlight the wine’s profile.

On 27 June, Sala welcomed Blankbottle, an unconventional winery led by surfer and winemaker Pieter Walser. His eclectic selection, paired with bold flavours like saffron-truffle smoked salmon and lavender parsnip lamb, invited guests into a more experimental tasting experience.

Both events reflected Sala’s combination of the beauty of the Indian Ocean and perfect hospitality and cuisine for truly special evenings.

Wellness Weekend and Fairlawns Boutique Hotel and Spa:

Healing Earth skincare blending

This July, Fairlawns Boutique Hotel & Spa partnered with Healing Earth to host a serene wellness retreat focused on holistic renewal and the elemental power of fire.

Over three days, guests immersed themselves in a carefully thought-out programme that blended luxury, self-care, and mindful experiences—ranging from sound healing and restorative yoga to bespoke spa treatments and breathwork rituals.

The weekend also featured interactive highlights like a sushi masterclass with Chef Song, skincare blending in the Healing Earth Beauty Kitchen, and a garden-side talk on gut health by Dr Nadine Haberfeld.

Set within the hotel’s tranquil courtyard and Balinese-style spa, the retreat offered guests a chance to recalibrate and reconnect—with themselves and the natural rhythm of wellness.
