Bushtops Safari Camps - News from The Mara & Serengeti
After the floods have passed…
the floods are over…
As many of you will know, Kenya has faced a recent spate of damaging floods, which have extended to the Masai Mara. Being a hilltop Conservancy away from the rivers spared us the effects at Mara Bushtops, but many camps and individuals were badly affected. It is with great relief that we can report that the waters have now receded and things are returning to normal.
Blessedly, the local impact has not been as bad as feared. As the Talek river broke its banks, we saw two giraffe and one topi caught and killed by the floodwaters; however, other areas were far less affected and we believe that most wildlife escaped the deluge. None of the bridges were washed away on the greater Mara side, whilst the one damaged bridge at Talek gate has been repaired. Only the Mara bridge connecting Keekorok Road to Serena has been washed away, but we can still use an alternative route (the Mara Rianta bridge).
With water levels now almost back to normal, all areas have reopened. Some roads within the Mara National Park are damaged, but all are passable.
Whether the rains were a one-off or a result of climate change is hard to know. Either way, we feel very lucky to have escaped intact and our hearts go out to all those less fortunate.
Feeding the 700
On a much happier note, most schools countrywide have reopened – including one very special to us at Mara Bushtops. We have a long and proud history of supporting Nkoilale school with everything from facilities to water to pupil sponsorships, but one very kind guest has added an extremely generous and special new donation, making possible a lunchtime programme for more than 700 day pupils who might otherwise not be able to eat a proper meal. This feeding programme has now started and will continue for the foreseeable future. It’s a really heartwarming development and everyone at the school is so appreciative
huge success …. have you visited our Webcam?
If you have yet to discover the wonders of life in the African bush, why not join the virtual visitors to the most spectacular part of our Conservancy. Click on the link below to see a live feed of the Mara Bushtops salt lick with the camp in the background.
What do you do when an innovation proves popular? You make it even better –a great example being our new webcam at the Mara Bushtops salt lick. If you’ve not yet heard about it, this safe link takes you right up close, in the next best thing to a personal visit.
Since launch many now regularly ‘visit’ us vitually to enjoy a ringside seat of the visitors including elephants, giraffes and masses of antelopes, warthogs etc (even night-visiting hippo!). The enhancement is that the feed now incorporates sound, making the armchair safari experience even more enticing.

THOUGHTS FROM THE CEO, DR ANDREW BAXTER
Among the many delightful discoveries emanating from Babanango Game Reserve is an extraordinarily rich recored of archaeological finds - some dating back to the Early Stone Age hundreds of thousands of years ago. This topographically diverse and geologically complex region of Zululand has clearly held a special place for people since the earliest times.
One of the more interesting finds is an Iron Age hill-top embattlement comprised of fortified stone walls and pot sherds on the top of a huge granite dome, known as Madwaleni. This hill-top fortification is consistent in design with the “Moor Park” culture that dates to the early second millennium - but also differs in respect of construction material and orientation - making the discovery even more fascinating.
We will soon embark on an extensive archaeological survey of the greater Babanango Game Reserve and expect to uncover many more exciting clues as to the antiquity and cultural heritage of this fascinating region.
The Outpost & The Old Rectory go 'solar'
Rare Earth lives up to it’s name and goes ‘Solar’
a sustainable and enhanced guest experience
We look forward to a green 2024 as we ended 2023 on a high and enviromentally positive note with the news that the solar installations at both The Outpost and The Old Rectory had successfully come online.
These alternative power sources are not only more environmentally sensitive, but cost effective to run and allow us to offer a seamless guest experience, avoiding the frustration and inconvenience of power limitations or any service interruptions and disturbance from generators.
Babanango Diaries - What's in the Name?

What do Johhny Clegg and Babanango have in common?
CELEBRATIONS: On the 30th of November, the Babanago team and their trusted trade
partners in South Africa celebrated a monumental year-2023
Gathering at The Bond Shed in Durban, guests were treated to an evening, themed, “Nights Under African Skies” with special musical guest Jesse Clegg.
This was particularly meaningful, as Jesse's beloved late father, Johhny Clegg, put Babanago on the map with his song "Baba Nango", inspired by the story of a small Buthelezi child who got lost on the slopes of a mist-shrouded hill. When the elder brother found him, he shouted "baba nango", meaning "Father, there he is". This story is rumoured to be how the region got its name. The evening was also spent reflecting on all the success stories, from the grand opening of the reserve to the many rewilding initiatives that have happened thus far, there were smiles across the room and a shared excitement for all that’s to come for Babanango Game Reserve in 2024
Team work
Meet Sfiso, one of our amazing guides, whose love for nature and wildlife is so evident through his work. Here is his story, in his own words:
My name is Sfiso Mdletshe, and my nickname is Tsoro. I am from Kwa Sonto village, but I was born in Bergville. I love nature and teaching people the importance and value of Mother Nature. I enjoy talking about trees and flowers, as they are my passion. I also love big cats, but my spirit animal is the honey badger.
My best recent sighting at Babanango Game Reserve was a cheetah kill. Two males took down a wildebeest, and it really made my day. I love Babanango Game Reserve as it is more unique than other game reserves in KZN, with mountains, amazing valleys, and, most importantly, morning safaris when there is mist. This place is an absolute paradise!
A new season, brings new additions
With the spring rains breaking a long, dry winter at Babanango Game Reserve, we are thrilled to witness new beginnings for the diverse flora and fauna that call our reserve home.
Finding himself in the right place at the right time, Babanango COO Dr Andrew Baxter captured these beautiful shots of black-backed jackal pups rolling around in the African soil - a picture of new life and exciting progress in our rewilding project.

Mara Bushtops Webcam - Go on Safari from Home
Live webcam launch - the only safari camp in the Masai Mara with a substantial natural salt lick directly in front of camp.
Mara Bushtops launches new Webcam to the Wild
Kenya, 27 November 2023 – Mara Bushtops, the only safari camp in the Maasai Mara with a substantial natural salt lick directly in front of its camp, has just launched a new webcam with high speed internet ensuring a permanent live feed from one of Kenya’s wildlife hotspots. Watch all the action right here from the comfort of your home, and please be sure to subscribe as the links can change. Sound will also be added in the coming weeks.
A steady stream of wildlife visits the salt lick throughout the day and night, still visible after sunset via infrared technology, in search of the minerals needed for healthy bones. This creates a constantly shifting nature show, as gazelle jostle with warthogs, zebra and impala, topi and buffalo. Herds of elephant can be joined by up to 40 giraffe at any given time – with predators such as leopards and lions in attendance. What a privilege to have this permanent window to the wild! Most of the action occurs between 10AM - 4PM Kenya time (GMT +3) but viewers around the globe can also browse through the previous 12 hours of footage recorded in case they missed something.

Your tented space is actually a stunningly-appointed five-star ensuite haven, under canvas.
During the day it is open on three sides, letting you gaze out at timeless, endless vistas, interrupted only by birdsong. Relax, or ask your personal butler to arrange a hot tub in the sunken bathtub, a massage on the deck, or a meal in the privacy of your tent.
Then, after a day’s adventures, slip under fresh linen in your king size bed before being lulled to sleep by the timeless music of the Serengeti.
Welcome Babanango Game Reserve
Babanango Game Reserve brings a ‘wow’ factor…
A huge welcome to babanango game reserve who joins Travel Promoters as a portfolio partner
Babanango Game Reserve, located in the heart of Zululand, KwaZulu-Natal, is a showcase for one of the most ambitious rewilding projects in Southern Africa in recent years. Set among the breathtaking topography of the upper White Umfolozi River Valley, the reserve occupies a vast wilderness area of over 20,000 hectares that is steeped in Zulu history and layered upon geological features that date back to the beginning of time.
The reserve has four discrete lodges which cater to personal preferences. The unfenced Madwaleni River Lodge sets the standard for timeless luxury. Set on the banks of the White Umfolozi River in the centre of the reserve, guests will delight in the comfort and opulence reminiscent of a bygone era of indulgent travel.
The unfenced Zulu Rock Lodge, located in the northern part of the reserve and perched on an ancient granite mountain is defined by its free-standing villa-style rooms with expansive views.
Protected by a perimeter fence and nestled in the South of the reserve, the secluded Valley Lodge is ideal for families and intimate groups. For guests seeking a ‘back-to-basics’ wilderness experience, with either catered or self-catered options, Matatane Camp is the perfect destination for couples, families or groups. The rugged mountains and valleys provide refuge for an extraordinary diversity of birds, plants, insects, reptiles, and mammals, including the elusive aardvark and aardwolf. With the recent return of the African elephant, Babanango Game Reserve is Big 5. With highly knowledgeable guides and a range of activities to choose from, visitors to Babanango Game Reserve can be assured of an unrivalled safari experience. Significant historical battle sites, such as Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift, are located close by.
A unique project in rural Zululand where sustainable conservation, eco-tourism and community development intersect. The majority of the land incorporated into the reserve (74%) is owned by three community trusts (Emcakwini, Esibongweni, and KwaNgono). The commitment from these three trusts is integral to the long-term conservation success.
In turn, the allocation of land-lease income, conservation levies and other benefits from Babanango Game Reserve are vital to the economic well-being of the surrounding communities. A partnership between the game reserve and the community trusts is reinforced by commitments from the reserve to employ and upskill local community members. An animal ownership agreement ensures that the progeny of all animals will be jointly owned by the community trusts and the reserve.

Fairlawns is a welcome addition to compliment and enhance our existing partnerships - underpinning our focus on ‘properties with personality’.
As a team, we like to think we carry a personality of our own and are fortunate to enjoy strong, respected and mutually passionate relationships with every team member in our portfolio. Fairlawns embodies everything we respect and love about the hospitality industry.
It’s these relationships that enable us to not only reach new audiences, but enhance existing trade links.
Established in 1997, Fairlawns features individually decorated suites including a two bedroom Tree House Studio and two bedroom Maison Spa Suite, as well as Villa Moji, a self contained two bedroom private residence all surrounded by 5.5 acres of gardens.
The perfect place to recuperate after a long flight or between destinations, guests can choose to relax in the Balinese Spa Garden, enjoy traquil private, outdoor massage and treatment areas as well as a variety of dining and fine cuisine offerings.
Under the leadership of Managing Director, Michael Kewley, “Fairlawns was one of the first five-star boutique hotels to be opened in Johannesburg. It has grown from a staff complement of 13 to just over 100 today. Originally the Oppenheimer Estate, Fairlawns still exudes a park-like ambience with huge trees and prolific birdlife.”
