Babanango Game Reserve wins Gold Eco-Tourism Award

Babanango Game Reserve won the Gold Award in the Eco-Hospitality and Tourism category in the Eco Logic Awards in Cape Town in November.

Event Image credit: Aaron Polikoff

The Eco-Logic Awards took place in November at the Two Oceans aquarium in Cape Town. The awards identify individuals, organisations and communities that positively contribute towards a sustainable world – and it encourages consumers to support them by purchasing  their products and services. Celebrating so many inspirational winners, we are so proud of Babanango Game Reserve, who claimed the Gold Award in the Eco-Hospitality and Tourism category.

The event celebrated achievements across a wide range of sectors, from wildlife conservation and waste innovation to water preservation.

Babanango Game Reserve’s Gold Award in the ‘Eco-Hospitality and Tourism category’ highlights organisations that “whilst serving the needs of human beings are also supportive of and beneficial for the Earth’s biodiversity, eco-systems or natural resources.”

“It is an absolute privilege to represent Babanango Game Reserve in receiving this award. The recognition that the Eco-Logic Awards and the sponsors have given this unique project by awarding us Gold is so appreciated and affirms our commitment to our ecotourism and conservation objectives.”
— Sarah Alcock, Group Human Resources Manager, Babanango Game Reserves.Quote Source

Collaboration With Local Communities

Babanango Game Reserve exemplifies a remarkable collaboration between progressive local communities with land-ownership rights and dedicated philanthropic investors. Nearly 74% of the reserve is owned by three community trusts, which benefit from the income generated through long-term leases. This partnership has also created significant value for local communities by generating over 200 permanent jobs, making the project one of the largest employers in the district municipality.

Conservation Efforts – Rewilding of Mammals

Over the past five years, the project has launched one of the most significant game translocation efforts in Southern Africa. They have carefully sourced and reintroduced over 3,000 large mammal species back into their original habitats. In 2023, Babanango Game Reserve reintroduced elephants, achieving 'Big 5' status, while also emphasizing the importance of other key species. The reserve features diverse landscapes, endangered vegetation, and holds substantial historical and cultural significance.

Eco-Tourism

Not only has the reserve restored the land through its successful rewilding project, but the four lodges and camps also incorporate numerous design elements made from repurposed resources found

on-site. Existing structures were often adapted rather than newly constructed, utilizing locally sourced sustainable materials and employing artisans from nearby communities.

The lodges and camps at Babanango Game Reserve exemplify superior quality and ethical standards by combining luxury with sustainability. Each lodge is thoughtfully designed, demonstrating a commitment to preserving the natural environment while providing guests with a unique and enriching experience

“Babanango Game Reserve is very excited for the future. This unique conservation and tourism project is incredibly proud to be part of our country’s tourism sector that is so critically important to our national and local economy. We will continue our commitment to ethical and sustainable business practices and creating an enabling environment for our people to grow.”

A Year Of Achievement for Bushtops

An innovative initiative created to offer the luxury of private charter flights in a shared basis.

Our 12 'Hurrays' of Christmas

As Christmas approaches, we thought we'd share our very own 12 reasons to be joyous - not just during the festive season, but (who knows?), maybe to inspire your Bushtops visit in 2025.

1. A New Home for Roving Bushtops by the Mara River

2024 was the year we established a new home for Roving Bushtops near the Mara River, creating bases at both ends of the Serengeti. Guests can now combine stays here with time at Serengeti Bushtops, Mara Bushtops, or both.

2. Spectacular Crossings: A Migration Season to Remember

The migration in the northern Serengeti and Masai Mara was truly spectacular again this year: river crossings went on until mid-October. It's worth noting that September and October are ideal months in which to view the migration and river crossings in the northern Serengeti, with relatively few visitors compared to the peak months of July and August.

3. Meet Our Stars: The People Who Make Bushtops Shine

We continue to employ some truly amazing people: reviews always highlight just how impressive and warm they are. Pictured are just a few of our shining stars ...

4. Introducing the Remodeled Family Suites at Mara Bushtops

We remodelled our family suite at Mara Bushtops and built a new family suite. Both look exceptional.

5. A Fresh Look: Serengeti Bushtops Tented Suites Reimagined

Our tented suites at Serengeti Bushtops were also given a complete makeover. Judging from initial feedback, guests love the results.

6. Sunsets, and Wildlife: Tune into Our Popular Webcam

The webcam over our Mara Bushtops salt lick is proving to be hugely popular. Alongside occasional visitors, a community of Bushtops fans gathers most evenings to watch the wildlife and chat happily as the sun sets. Click here to take a look at what's happening right now ...

7. Feeding Futures: A Generous Gift for Nkoilale School

Incredibly generous guests helped us kick-start a feeding programme at Nkoilale school during 2024: as a result, 700 day-school pupils now enjoy hot lunches. They have also enabled us to build a new kitchen onto the existing canteen, plus stores, an office and serving area.

8. Transforming Bisalala School: Water, Washrooms, and More

We also completed two major projects at the Bisalala school near Serengeti Bushtops. Our guests have helped us pipe water from a nearby village, create 10 new washrooms, renovated 2 classrooms,  add multiple water tanks, install more than 100 desks and provide plenty of needed school supplies.

9. Changing Lives: Celebrating 15 Years of Sponsoring Education

This year brought the number of children we and our guests have sponsored through their education during the past 15 years to 250.

One of the very first students to be sponsored was Helen Kamakia (pictured above). She went on to Mt. Kenya University and got a diploma in supply and procurement management and has just landed a job at Mara Bushtops. One of her responsibilities is to look after the sponsorship programme and meet with guests who want to know more about the process.

We are absolutely delighted to have Helen as part of our team and wish her the best of luck in her professional endeavours.

10. Amani Spa: Award-Winning Wellness in the Wild

The Amani Spa at Mara Bushtops continues to get rave reviews, maintaining the quality that has won it multiple awards over the years. The latest one being by the World Luxury Spa awards where Mara Bushtops has won in 3 categories as the global winners 2024.

11. 800+ 5-Star Reviews: The Essence of Wild Luxury

Our reputation for Wild Luxury - combining the best of nature and nurture - has earned all three of our camps 5 stars from more than 800 Tripadvisor reviewers. Each represents a guest who has truly reconnected with what matters at a Bushtops camp.

12. Press Accolades in 2024: Recognition for Passion and Excellence

Press reviews in 2024 called us one of the 4 best safari trips that support local communities (National Geographic Travellers), a 5 star bucket list experience that respects the environment (Town and Country)  and just for a bit of nostalgic festive fun, this time last year we were amused to be included in Gwyneth Paltrow's Goop Holiday Gift Guide when they recommended a moving, solar-powered safari at Roving Bushtops as their 'Ridiculous but Awesome' gift for travel lovers.

We'll never rest on our laurels, but it's lovely to have our passion and commitment recognised.

Babanango Game Reserve won the Gold Award in the Eco-Hospitality and Tourism category in the Eco Logic Awards in Cape Town in November.

SAY ‘YES’ - OUR NEWEST OFFERING AT BABANANGO GAME RESERVE , WEDDINGS

We are excited to introduce Babanango Game Reserve as your new wedding destination in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Exchange vows on the banks of the White Umfolozi River at our Madwaleni River

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC'S '25 BEST PLACES IN THE WORLD TO TRAVEL TO IN 2025'

Babanango Game Reserve has been recognised as one of National Geographic's '25 best places in the world to travel to in 2025.' "The nearly 50,000-acre Babanango Game Reserve is home to the nation's most ambitious rewilding project in decades, successfully reintroducing elephants, lions, rare antelope like oribi and klipspringer, and endangered black rhinos." We are honoured to be handpicked by the publication's explorers, photographers, and editors alongside some of the most beautiful and prestigious places in the world.

WELCOMING OUR NEW CHEETAH CUBS: An exciting update on our rewilding journey - welcoming our first Cheetah cubs.

"The female cheetah was introduced onto Babanango Game Reserve on 2 April 2023. She had been on the reserve for just over a year and a half when she gave birth to five beautiful cubs. The cubs are about 2 months old and mom has done a great job keeping them safe and healthy, especially with the presence of other larger predators such as lions, leopards and hyenas," says Babanango Game Reserve's Ecologist, Stuart Dunlop.

"We believe this is her first litter and marks yet another milestone for us, with this being the first cheetah cubs born in this area in over 150 years. This success would not have been possible without the support from the surrounding communities who offered up valuable grazing land to conserve natural fauna and flora in the heart of Zululand. A true community-conservation success story." Thank you to our talented guide, Mandla, for capturing and sharing the first glimpse of the cubs with us!

MADWALENI RIVER LODGE BOMA: A CULTURAL AND NATURAL DESIGN MARVEL

Introducing our Madwaleni River Lodge Boma set along the White Umfolozi River. Inspired by the traditional Zulu beehive huts, the boma at Madwaleni River Lodge is a testament to the elegance of simple, yet purposeful design. Created from repurposed black wattle trees from our land rehabilitation project, and crafted by local artisans, it combines both conservation and cultural heritage within the structure. The circular flow echoes a theme of harmony, whilst also guiding guests into the centre of the space. The beauty of the setting is magnified by the intricate interplay of light and shadow on the woven walls, creating an intimate ambiance.

"This site, once an old cattle kraal, has always drawn people to its natural beauty. Now, as the Madwaleni Boma, it offers a unique open-air dining experience where guests can connect with the rich cultural history and the surrounding wilderness." Andrew McGill, Babanango Product Manager.

Roving Bushtops new location for 2025

Roving Bushtops to have a new location in the Northern Serengeti alongside it's popular seasonal Southern Serengeti location.

Roving Bushtops will have a new home in the Northern Serengeti …..

The beauty of having a mobile camp in the Serengeti is that we can change our location whenever the circumstances are right. The idea, of course, is to give guests like you every opportunity to see the magnificent flora and fauna of the Bush – especially the migration as it passes by.

And that’s why we’re on the move. Based on recent developments, we have decided to tweak this model and to move Roving Bushtops between the southern and northern Serengeti only and leave out the central Serengeti altogether.

We have secured a wonderful new location in the northern Serengeti, a 15 minute drive to the Mara river and Kogatende airstrip.

The terrain makes for fantastic game viewing – and the vistas are gorgeous, stretching away to both sunset and sunrise. The proximity to the Mara river and Bologonja for Rhino sightings is ideal. Therefore, from 1st of June 2025 onwards, we will be making this our regular northern location.

This means that from December to March Roving Bushtops will be in Kusini, Southern Serengeti whilst from June until October we will be in the northern Serengeti. The latter is around 17 kilometres (a 40 minute game drive ) from Serengeti Bushtops.

It will be easier than ever to combine both our Tanzanian camps within a single visit, or to add Mara Bushtops just over the Kenyan border, making visits trebly memorable.

If you haven’t seen how we manoeuvre and set up Roving Bushtops, take a look here - it really is incredible how the team create a luxury camp in a matter of hours….

So whether it’s a big adventure or a flying visit, Bushtops’ options just got bigger and better!

Mara Bushtops - Conservancy Conservation

Valuable conservation work continues within the Isaaten Conservancy.

Conservation work is vital and continual when you are the only lodge in the region…

Anyone familiar with Mara Bushtops knows that our pride and joy is being the only camp within theIsaaten Conservancy. This gives us a private safari destination on our doorstep, with wildlife roamingfree around the camp. This privileged access means our guests can view animals from their tents andtrucks without having to compete with other vehicles and visitors.

We also have a responsibility to look after this precious private land, conserving the flora and fauna, enhancing our guests’ experience, and working with local herders to balance their needs against thoseof the local wildlife.

Examples of recent interventions include collaring a lioness to monitor her movements and keep herpride safe by preventing her getting too close to livestock. We also helped sedate and treat a giraffe

Serengeti Bushtops Reimagined

Serengeti Bushtops - Reimagined

SERENGETI BUSHTOPS IS LOOKING FABULOUS AFTER A ‘MASTER OF DESIGN’ REMODEL…

Master of design Andrin Schweizer has just completely remodelled the interiors at Serengeti Bushtops in Tanzania, creating stylish, 5-star suites under canvas that embody the “wild luxury” experience that is so synonymous with Bushtops.

The redesigned suites now feature elegant new furniture and matching softs, with ceiling fans and subtle-lighting lanterns and generously stocked mini bars. Hand-cut slate from a local quarry has contributed dramatically to the revamped, upgraded bathrooms.

The camp also now offers four buggies, allowing guests to be shuttled with ease and speed between their suites and public areas, like mini safaris. Of course, nothing matches a proper game drive expedition in our open-sided Toyota 4x4s, but these buggies are always a big hit with guests.

Speaking of game drives, the countdown has officially begun to launching our fabulous new beauty of a Beast, which will offer a one-of-a-kind safari experience in the Serengeti!   Watch this space...

Bushtops Safari Camps - News from The Mara & Serengeti

After the floods have passed…

the floods are over…

As many of you will know, Kenya has faced a recent spate of damaging floods, which have extended to the Masai Mara. Being a hilltop Conservancy away from the rivers spared us the effects at Mara Bushtops, but many camps and individuals were badly affected. It is with great relief that we can report that the waters have now receded and things are returning to normal.

Blessedly, the local impact has not been as bad as feared. As the Talek river broke its banks, we saw two giraffe and one topi caught and killed by the floodwaters; however, other areas were far less affected and we believe that most wildlife escaped the deluge. None of the bridges were washed away on the greater Mara side, whilst the one damaged bridge at Talek gate has been repaired. Only the Mara bridge connecting Keekorok Road to Serena has been washed away, but we can still use an alternative route (the Mara Rianta bridge).

With water levels now almost back to normal, all areas have reopened. Some roads within the Mara National Park are damaged, but all are passable.

Whether the rains were a one-off or a result of climate change is hard to know. Either way, we feel very lucky to have escaped intact and our hearts go out to all those less fortunate.

Feeding the 700

On a much happier note, most schools countrywide have reopened – including one very special to us at Mara Bushtops. We have a long and proud history of supporting Nkoilale school with everything from facilities to water to pupil sponsorships, but one very kind guest has added an extremely generous and special new donation, making possible a lunchtime programme for more than 700 day pupils who might otherwise not be able to eat a proper meal. This feeding programme has now started and will continue for the foreseeable future. It’s a really heartwarming development and everyone at the school is so appreciative

huge success …. have you visited our Webcam?
