Cocoon Collection Gourmet Week at You & Me Maldives

From the Mediterranean to the Maldivian Seas with Andrea Berton: Experience Gourmet week by the Cocoon Collection.

Cocoon Collection Gourmet Week Showcases Mediterranean Maldivian Culinary Fusion

The Maldives, 15 April 2025

From 19 to 24 May 2025, Gourmet Week, one of the most anticipated events of the gastronomic calendar, will be taking place at You&Me Maldives by The Cocoon Collection, the exclusive adults-only resort nestled in the Raa Atoll.

Chef Andrea Berton at the H2O Restaurant

The undisputed protagonists of this new edition are the Michelin-starred Chef Andrea Berton and the Corporate Executive of The Cocoon Collection Chef Giovanni De Ambrosis, who together will give life to a unique culinary journey, capable of blending Mediterranean elegance with the innovation and warmth of local Maldivian ingredients.

“Cooking in the Maldives is always a magical experience. The setting is unique and stimulates creativity.  I love bringing the flavours of our Italian tradition into dialogue with the wonderful local ingredients.  It's a true meeting of seas and cultures,” enthusiastically declares Chef Berton, who returns to tread the sand of You&Me with its refined and contemporary cuisine.

Chef Giovanni De Ambrosis

“Collaborating on such a high-calibre event means being able to combine the best of two worlds: tradition and innovation. Together with Andrea, I want to tell a story of flavours that unite the Mediterranean and the exotic riches of the Maldives. For us at The Cocoon Collection, each dish is an invitation to travel and to the love of cooking,” adds Giovanni De Ambrosis.

The gastronomic journey will open on Wednesday 21 May at 7.30 pm with an exclusive dinner at The Sand restaurant. Under the stars, guests can indulge in the refined Branzino Maldivian in black with local fish soup and salicornia, symbol of the meeting between the South Seas and the elegance of Italian cuisine.

Subsequently, on Friday 23 May from 12.30, the open-air restaurant Green Carpet will host a signature lunch: Roasted scallops, asparagus, papaya and almonds, a dish that enhances the perfect combination of sweetness, freshness and the richness of local ingredients reinterpreted in Mediterranean key.

A true Mediterranean immersion in the Maldivian seas: the Gourmet Week of You&Me Maldives thus becomes a hymn to the love for cuisine and the territory. The event, in fact, is not only an opportunity to taste top-quality dishes, but also a sensory experience that celebrates the dialogue between cultures, traditions and passion for good food.

You&Me Maldives confirms itself, once again, as the ideal stage to meet and discover authentic emotions, where the beauty of the landscape marries with the culinary mastery of the two Chefs, offering their guests unrepeatable moments of taste, refinement and of love.

The Cocoon Foundation: Committed to Communities and Conservation of the Maldives

Lhaviyani Atoll School Students Visit

Lhaviyani Atoll School Students Visit

Maldives, April 2025 – The Cocoon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of The Cocoon Collection, is deeply rooted in the heart of the Maldives, with its mission firmly on improving and enhancing the quality of life for local communities, particularly in the atolls of Lhaviyani and Raa, where the Cocoon Maldives and You & Me Maldives resorts are located. Focussing on economic, educational and environmental sustainability, the Foundation is committed to creating a lasting impact, offering growth opportunities and contributing to the protection of the environment.

A central aspect of Cocoon Foundation’s mission is to empower young people, who are considered the key to a more prosperous future. Through training programs, mentorships and educational visits, the Foundation offers local youth the opportunity to discover the world of hospitality and acquire concrete professional skills. Projects such as the visit of R. Ungoofaaru’s students to You & Me Maldives and the youth leadership sessions at Lh. Kurendhoo represent a unique opportunity to engage with the tourism industry, understand the dynamics of a luxury resort and develop key skills such as teamwork and communication.

Olhuvelifushi School Visit

But the Cocoon Foundation’s commitment does not stop at education: environmental protection and sustainability are fundamental pillars of its activity. Respect and conservation of the ecosystems of the Maldives are at the heart of numerous initiatives, including the restoration of coral reefs, the creation of marine protected areas and the adoption of sustainable fishing practices. The Foundation has also launched renewable energy projects, investing in solutions such as solar energy to reduce the environmental impact of the resorts. The issue of water management is also a priority, with initiatives that promote water recycling and the use of desalination plants to ensure responsible consumption of water resources.

As evidence of this commitment, events such as the celebration of World Environment Day with tree planting and island clean-ups at Olhuvelifushi demonstrate how active community participation is essential to preserving the fragile natural balance of the Maldives. Resort guests can also make a concrete contribution by participating in eco-tourism experiences, reducing plastic consumption and supporting marine conservation initiatives.

Looking to the future, the Cocoon Foundation aims to expand its reach with new marine conservation areas, investments in sustainable technologies and local entrepreneurship initiatives, so that communities can develop autonomously and sustainably.

Attilio Azzola, Founder and Corporate Sales Manager of The Cocoon Collection, said: "Our goal is to create concrete opportunities for everyone, enhancing the potential of people and local communities. We firmly believe that progress must be inclusive and sustainable, which is why the Cocoon Foundation's projects do not limit themselves to providing immediate support, but aim to build a more solid and conscious future for the Maldives. Through training and mentorship programs, we want to give young people concrete tools to grow professionally and personally, offering them the opportunity to discover the dynamics of a strategic sector such as hospitality. We are convinced that education is the key to lasting development and for this reason we invest in initiatives that can really make a difference in the lives of new generations."

An African Safari First: The Outpost launches Sound Safaris

The Outpost launches a first for African Safari experiences - with their Sound Safari in South Africa’s Northern Kruger Park

Tucked away in the untouched Makuleke Concession of Northern Kruger National Park, lies The Outpost Lodge.

This remote getaway, with its surrounding patchwork landscape of lush forests, towering baobabs, rugged cliffs, and sweeping savannahs — all teeming with life and beauty.

Taking up a small portion of the Greater Kruger National Park - you will be amazed to know that 80% of the park's species call this area home. The area offers an exceptional safari experience without the bustle of crowds. It’s a haven for adventurers and anyone who loves immersing themselves in nature.

The Outpost introduces unique sound safaris

‘Think of the smell of the first rains, the sight of the African sunset, and now The Outpost is bringing you the sounds of Africa.

No matter what language you speak or culture you belong to, the sounds of nature connect us all.

A first to market safari experience using specialised sound equipment, the guests at The Outpost are taken on a fascinating auditory journey that engages the active skill of listening to enhance the traditional game drive experience.

The region’s rich biodiversity also creates opportunities to delve deeper into nature; beyond sightings of animals and birds, our new Sound Safari unearths the hidden world of wildlife calls, rumbles, squawks and grunts.

Whether to attract the opposite sex, defending territory or just a caring way of saying hello to their fellow friends, nature is awe inspiring when it comes to sound.  Imagine the dawn chorus in the fever tree forest, or the sound of hundreds of elephants communicating with one another, the call of the jackal as the sun sets on the horizon – where you aren’t separated by technology or a screen but given the advantage of a surround sound microphone bolted to the front of the vehicle with head phones to really enhance the listening experience.

This microphone amplifies the sound, and is so sensitive it can pick up sounds up to 5km away. Truly zoning into, which is often a forgotten sense, listening. Everything you know about the sounds of the African Bushveld, we are going to challenge it all, in our world first sound safari.

It is also a vivid and captivating way for guests with visual impairments to experience the bush, using this powerful new format to bring to life creatures great and small.

From infrasonic conversations between elephants and hippos to insect communication and mating calls, there are dozens of sounds to discover that are usually inaudible to the human ear.

While we try and err on the side of digital detox, technology can facilitate a richer connection to nature, especially in a world where AI dominates. The authenticity of nature can never be replaced.

The Sound Safari is a world first extension of the guest experience at The Outpost, complementing our existing approach which seeks to highlight the diversity of the area while drawing attention to all the “little things” that make the Makuleke concession so special.

We encourage our guests to truly slow down, take moments for themselves and to limit distractions; to be fully immersed in nature and to sharpen their senses to the stories it whispers when one finds the time and space to listen.

Travel Promoters welcomes Ol Lentille

Ol Lentille in Laikipia, Kenya appoints Travel Promoters as their Sales & Marketing Representatives for the UK.

Travel Promoters to represent Ol Lentille

Travel Promoters is delighted to share its appointment as UK Sales & Marketing representatives for Ol Lentille in Laikipia, Kenya. Ol Lentille is an exclusive luxury safari lodge perched on a rocky hilltop overlooking its vast 40,000-acre private conservancy, with the breathtaking backdrop of Mount Kenya and the Samburu sacred mountain of Ololokwe.

“We are delighted to be working with Andre, Laura and their team to market these four, fully serviced private villas set in this remote, unparalleled wilderness of Kenya to the UK trade. It is such a unique property which fits beautifully with Mara Bushtops, our other Kenyan property. Their commitment to “Place, People and Privacy” is an ethos that resonates with our own, and we look forward to sharing updates with our tour operator and travel agent partners.” said Ailsa Tavares.

Besides its absolute exclusivity in a largely undiscovered region of Kenya, and its wide range of activities on offer, what truly sets Ol Lentille apart is its deep-rooted commitment to sustainability, conservation and community development. The lodge works closely with the local Maasai community who own the land, which has significantly improved their lives through investment into their schools, scholarships, healthcare and wildlife conservation, with over 5 million dollars raised since its inception.

“I would like to thank Simon Beck, who represented Ol Lentille with passion and flair for 10 years, and will always remain a friend and supporter of Ol Lentille.” said Andre Cohen.

This area is also one of the last unfenced parts of Laikipia and a major animal migration corridor, used by large herds of elephant and other wildlife. Importantly, as a community-owned lodge and conservancy, it is an ideal place for guests to experience both Maasai and Samburu culture in a truly authentic way.

Ol Lentille is known for its wide and varied range of activities, including game drives, guided walks, quad biking, camel safaris, and multiple community-related activities such as visiting the Singing Wells (in the dry season), and joining in life events (weddings and various other ceremonies). The conservancy is home to various wildlife species, including elephants, Grevy’s zebras, greater kudus, leopards, hyenas, and occasionally wild dogs and pairs well with wildlife rich destinations such as the Masai Mara.

The lodge comprises of four villas, namely Carissa, Aloe, Acacia and Boscia, a large infinity pool, a spa and the Gallery, a large “lounge” with a spectacular roof bar. Each villa comes with its dedicated safari vehicle and staff, including guide, host, housekeeper and night guard.

Bawe Island by the Cocoon Collection announces new Zanzibar Marine Reserve

The Cocoon Collection appoints Travel Promoters & Umlingo as their Sales, Marketing & PR Representatives for the UK and Ireland

BAWE ISLAND BY THE COCOON COLLECTION ANNOUNCES NEW ZANZIBAR MARINE RESERVE

Bawe Island by The Cocoon Collection, the only 5-star resort in Zanzibar, boasting the exclusive formula "one island, one resort", continues its path of environmental enhancement with a new initiative dedicated to the protection of the ecosystem.

In collaboration with the government of Zanzibar, a new marine reserve has been established which encompasses the entire coast of Bawe Island, to preserve the magnificent coral reef and rich fish population, ensuring the biodiversity and the vitality of the underwater ecosystem for future generations.

The reserve prohibits fishing in the protected area, allowing the wonderful reef to flourish undisturbed to encourage repopulation. This approach not only protects marine life, but also promotes the natural balance of the ecosystem, allowing the barrier coral to regenerate and prosper.

Attilio Azzola, Founder and Corporate Sales Manager of The Cocoon Collection, comments:

“Bawe Island is for us the realization of a dream: a place where luxury and sustainability meet in perfect balance, giving life to our firm commitment that goes far beyond the creation of the marine reserve. For years we have been working on several fronts to reduce our impact and enhance the environment that surrounds us. At Gold Zanzibar we have installed solar panels to produce clean energy and on the island of Bawe we have created the largest solar plant in Zanzibar. We use an advanced water desalination system, we recycle the wastewaters to reduce waste and we take care of the protection of the century-old turtles on Prison Island. This new initiative represents a step further in our vision of sustainable development, because we firmly believe that luxury and respect for nature can, and must coexist.”

In parallel with the protection of the marine environment, the project also includes the construction of modern and functional houses on the island for local fishermen. These houses, equipped with private bays, will allow fishermen to easily reach the areas of fishing authorized o shore, outside the protected area. This model of coexistence between luxury tourism and sustainable development safeguards local traditions and contributes to the economic well-being of the community.

Located just a 15-minute boat ride from Stone Town, Bawe Island spans over 30 hectares of unspoiled nature and is an exclusive destination with 70 luxury villas, each with its own private garden, swimming pool and butler service with personal chef. For those seeking the ultimate in exclusivity, there is a 200m2 Sunrise Villa, whilst the majestic Sultan Palace spans an impressive 500m2 across two levels for up to 9 adults.

Guests of the resort can easily explore the wonders of Zanzibar, such as the forest of Jozani, ancient Stone Town and Prison Island and sensory spice tours - all of which combine beautifully with the thrill of a safari in Tanzania.

Bawe Island by The Cocoon Collection represents an exemplary model of how luxury can coexist with sustainability, offering its guests an exclusive refuge whilst actively contributing to the protection of the environment and the improvement of the quality of life of the local community.

The majority of our properties are independent and family-owned, which is why The Cocoon Collection is such a seamless fit, with one of its key draw-cards being the forty plus years of history and passion invested by the Azzola family.”  said Ailsa Tavares.

The Azzola family is committed to giving back where its properties operate.  The Sofia Luna Azzola Foundation was founded in Zanzibar in 2016 and works alongside other NGOs to support local schools and orphanages.  Since 2019, the foundation, in collaboration with generous guests, supporters and volunteers, is proud to have built a new kindergarten, a primary school and a sporting centre in Kendwa village.  In the Maldives, The Cocoon Foundation was also set up in 2022 to support neighbouring communities of the Lhaviyani and Raa atolls.

Babanango Game Reserve introduces Walking Safaris

Babanango Game Reserve introduces unique walking safari experiences that include a special sleep out under the stars.

Babanango Game Reserve is excited to introduce their latest experience, their newly launched ' Walking Safaris'.

These extraordinary safaris immerse you completely in the African bush, surrounded by a tapestry of sights, sounds, and smells. Each crackle of footstep, the flow of water, and the excitement of animal calls come to life, creating an experience where you truly feel it all.

While a game drive safari is undoubtedly a bucket-list adventure, nothing quite compares to a walking safari. This guided walk and overnight camping experience places you right in the heart of the African wilderness.

At Babanango Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal, your guide will lead you through the hills, grasslands, and valleys of the White Umfolozi River. Along the way, you’ll have the chance to encounter not only the famed Big Five but also discover hidden gems best experienced on foot.

Camp under the stars

After a day of exploration, your adventure continues with an overnight stay in one of our canvas tents at the base camp. Nestled in a secluded area of the reserve, these tents provide a rustic yet comfortable retreat, equipped with essential facilities, sleeping bags, and lantern lighting. Fall asleep to the sounds of the bush and wake with the African sunrise for an authentic connection to nature.

Immersive Safari Experience

A walking safari allows you to step onto the land, engaging all your senses in a way that traditional game drives can't. Feel the crunch of dry grass underfoot, hear the distant call of a fish eagle, and breathe in the earthy scent of the bush. This slower pace lets you notice the smaller details, like animal tracks and wildflowers. After a day of adventure, unwind around a campfire with dinner and drinks under the African stars. Our experienced guides have intimate knowledge of Babanango Game Reserve’s 20,000 hectares of African bush, ensuring a remarkable adventure.

Close Encounters with Wildlife

Get closer to wildlife than you ever thought possible on a KZN walking safari. Encountering animals like giraffes, zebras, or even a herd of elephants on foot provides a thrilling and humbling experience. The slower pace allows you to observe them in their natural habitat, appreciating their place in the broader ecosystem. Our expert guides ensure every encounter is non-intrusive for both your safety and that of the wildlife.

Lesson in Bushcraft

A walking safari is not just about exploring but also learning. Our knowledgeable guides will teach you essential bushcraft survival skills, such as identifying animal tracks, spotting camouflaged creatures, and recognizing edible or medicinal plants. You’ll also learn to interpret animal behavior and understand the intricate balance of the ecosystem. This deeper understanding enriches your safari experience, providing skills you can appreciate long after your visit.

Sustainable Adventure

Walking safaris are one of the most eco-friendly ways to explore the African wilderness. With minimal environmental impact, they align perfectly with Babanango Game Reserve’s commitment to sustainability. Our conservation initiatives aim to protect biodiversity while supporting local communities, ensuring this remarkable landscape is preserved for future generations. Your walking safari will deepen your connection to the bush and contribute to the region’s conservation efforts.

Babanango Game Reserve wins Gold Eco-Tourism Award

Babanango Game Reserve won the Gold Award in the Eco-Hospitality and Tourism category in the Eco Logic Awards in Cape Town in November.

Event Image credit: Aaron Polikoff

The Eco-Logic Awards took place in November at the Two Oceans aquarium in Cape Town. The awards identify individuals, organisations and communities that positively contribute towards a sustainable world – and it encourages consumers to support them by purchasing  their products and services. Celebrating so many inspirational winners, we are so proud of Babanango Game Reserve, who claimed the Gold Award in the Eco-Hospitality and Tourism category.

The event celebrated achievements across a wide range of sectors, from wildlife conservation and waste innovation to water preservation.

Babanango Game Reserve’s Gold Award in the ‘Eco-Hospitality and Tourism category’ highlights organisations that “whilst serving the needs of human beings are also supportive of and beneficial for the Earth’s biodiversity, eco-systems or natural resources.”

“It is an absolute privilege to represent Babanango Game Reserve in receiving this award. The recognition that the Eco-Logic Awards and the sponsors have given this unique project by awarding us Gold is so appreciated and affirms our commitment to our ecotourism and conservation objectives.”
— Sarah Alcock, Group Human Resources Manager, Babanango Game Reserves.Quote Source

Collaboration With Local Communities

Babanango Game Reserve exemplifies a remarkable collaboration between progressive local communities with land-ownership rights and dedicated philanthropic investors. Nearly 74% of the reserve is owned by three community trusts, which benefit from the income generated through long-term leases. This partnership has also created significant value for local communities by generating over 200 permanent jobs, making the project one of the largest employers in the district municipality.

Conservation Efforts – Rewilding of Mammals

Over the past five years, the project has launched one of the most significant game translocation efforts in Southern Africa. They have carefully sourced and reintroduced over 3,000 large mammal species back into their original habitats. In 2023, Babanango Game Reserve reintroduced elephants, achieving 'Big 5' status, while also emphasizing the importance of other key species. The reserve features diverse landscapes, endangered vegetation, and holds substantial historical and cultural significance.

Eco-Tourism

Not only has the reserve restored the land through its successful rewilding project, but the four lodges and camps also incorporate numerous design elements made from repurposed resources found

on-site. Existing structures were often adapted rather than newly constructed, utilizing locally sourced sustainable materials and employing artisans from nearby communities.

The lodges and camps at Babanango Game Reserve exemplify superior quality and ethical standards by combining luxury with sustainability. Each lodge is thoughtfully designed, demonstrating a commitment to preserving the natural environment while providing guests with a unique and enriching experience

“Babanango Game Reserve is very excited for the future. This unique conservation and tourism project is incredibly proud to be part of our country’s tourism sector that is so critically important to our national and local economy. We will continue our commitment to ethical and sustainable business practices and creating an enabling environment for our people to grow.”

A Year Of Achievement for Bushtops

An innovative initiative created to offer the luxury of private charter flights in a shared basis.

Our 12 'Hurrays' of Christmas

As Christmas approaches, we thought we'd share our very own 12 reasons to be joyous - not just during the festive season, but (who knows?), maybe to inspire your Bushtops visit in 2025.

1. A New Home for Roving Bushtops by the Mara River

2024 was the year we established a new home for Roving Bushtops near the Mara River, creating bases at both ends of the Serengeti. Guests can now combine stays here with time at Serengeti Bushtops, Mara Bushtops, or both.

2. Spectacular Crossings: A Migration Season to Remember

The migration in the northern Serengeti and Masai Mara was truly spectacular again this year: river crossings went on until mid-October. It's worth noting that September and October are ideal months in which to view the migration and river crossings in the northern Serengeti, with relatively few visitors compared to the peak months of July and August.

3. Meet Our Stars: The People Who Make Bushtops Shine

We continue to employ some truly amazing people: reviews always highlight just how impressive and warm they are. Pictured are just a few of our shining stars ...

4. Introducing the Remodeled Family Suites at Mara Bushtops

We remodelled our family suite at Mara Bushtops and built a new family suite. Both look exceptional.

5. A Fresh Look: Serengeti Bushtops Tented Suites Reimagined

Our tented suites at Serengeti Bushtops were also given a complete makeover. Judging from initial feedback, guests love the results.

6. Sunsets, and Wildlife: Tune into Our Popular Webcam

The webcam over our Mara Bushtops salt lick is proving to be hugely popular. Alongside occasional visitors, a community of Bushtops fans gathers most evenings to watch the wildlife and chat happily as the sun sets. Click here to take a look at what's happening right now ...

7. Feeding Futures: A Generous Gift for Nkoilale School

Incredibly generous guests helped us kick-start a feeding programme at Nkoilale school during 2024: as a result, 700 day-school pupils now enjoy hot lunches. They have also enabled us to build a new kitchen onto the existing canteen, plus stores, an office and serving area.

8. Transforming Bisalala School: Water, Washrooms, and More

We also completed two major projects at the Bisalala school near Serengeti Bushtops. Our guests have helped us pipe water from a nearby village, create 10 new washrooms, renovated 2 classrooms,  add multiple water tanks, install more than 100 desks and provide plenty of needed school supplies.

9. Changing Lives: Celebrating 15 Years of Sponsoring Education

This year brought the number of children we and our guests have sponsored through their education during the past 15 years to 250.

One of the very first students to be sponsored was Helen Kamakia (pictured above). She went on to Mt. Kenya University and got a diploma in supply and procurement management and has just landed a job at Mara Bushtops. One of her responsibilities is to look after the sponsorship programme and meet with guests who want to know more about the process.

We are absolutely delighted to have Helen as part of our team and wish her the best of luck in her professional endeavours.

10. Amani Spa: Award-Winning Wellness in the Wild

The Amani Spa at Mara Bushtops continues to get rave reviews, maintaining the quality that has won it multiple awards over the years. The latest one being by the World Luxury Spa awards where Mara Bushtops has won in 3 categories as the global winners 2024.

11. 800+ 5-Star Reviews: The Essence of Wild Luxury

Our reputation for Wild Luxury - combining the best of nature and nurture - has earned all three of our camps 5 stars from more than 800 Tripadvisor reviewers. Each represents a guest who has truly reconnected with what matters at a Bushtops camp.

12. Press Accolades in 2024: Recognition for Passion and Excellence

Press reviews in 2024 called us one of the 4 best safari trips that support local communities (National Geographic Travellers), a 5 star bucket list experience that respects the environment (Town and Country)  and just for a bit of nostalgic festive fun, this time last year we were amused to be included in Gwyneth Paltrow's Goop Holiday Gift Guide when they recommended a moving, solar-powered safari at Roving Bushtops as their 'Ridiculous but Awesome' gift for travel lovers.

We'll never rest on our laurels, but it's lovely to have our passion and commitment recognised.
