Luxury safari experiences are increasingly defined by a sense of place, and Mhondoro Safari Lodge & Villa has taken that philosophy a step further with the launch of Sterkstroom, an exclusive collection of five artisanal South African spirits created in partnership with Primal Distillery.
Named after the Sterkstroom River that flows through Welgevonden Game Reserve, the collection reflects the character and energy of the landscape surrounding the lodge. Meaning "strong current", Sterkstroom captures both the wild setting of Welgevonden and the connection between nature, craftsmanship and hospitality that underpins the Mhondoro experience.
Each spirit in the collection is inspired by one of the reserve's iconic animals and has been carefully developed using South African ingredients and local expertise. The range includes:
Elephant Gin, crafted with rare Rex Union orange, Eastern Cape juniper and fresh botanicals grown by Primal Distillery in Johannesburg.
Lion Light Rum, made from South African sugar cane and designed to reflect the warmth and confidence of its namesake.
Buffalo Cape Reserve Brandy, produced from grapes sourced from established South African wine regions.
Rhino Premium Grain Vodka, triple-distilled to create a smooth, full-bodied spirit with subtle herbal notes.
Leopard Limoncello, produced through Mhondoro's Farmhouse Project using Primal vodka and lemons grown on the organic Vygeboom farm adjacent to the reserve, following a recipe developed at the lodge.
The collaboration brings together the expertise of Johannesburg-based Primal Distillery, known for its focus on ingredient quality, provenance and storytelling, with the distinct environment of Welgevonden. The result is a collection that gives guests an authentic taste of the destination while reinforcing the connection between the lodge and its surroundings.
The launch complements Mhondoro's wider food and beverage offering. Guests can already enjoy menus inspired by chef Luke Dale Roberts, a premium wine list and a selection of exclusive house wines produced by Snow Mountain Wines. These include Elcat Sparkling Chardonnay, Wit Voël Chenin Blanc, Rooi Voël Syrah, Wit Voël Chardonnay and Rooi Voël Merlot, sourced from respected wine-growing regions including Wellington and Stellenbosch.
Designed to be enjoyed as part of the safari experience, the Sterkstroom spirits are intended for everything from classic serves to evening cocktails at sunset. Against the backdrop of Welgevonden's wildlife and landscapes, they offer another layer to the guest experience and a distinctive reminder of the destination.
For Mhondoro owner Frank Vogel, the collection reflects a growing appreciation for authenticity and local craftsmanship.
“Creating our own collection of spirits felt like a natural next step for Mhondoro. A premium experience is not defined by an international label, but by the quality, provenance and story behind what we serve. Working with Primal Distillery has allowed us to select the ingredients, develop the flavour profiles and ensure every spirit reflects the quality we want our guests to experience.
It is equally important that the collection is made here in South Africa. Local production supports exceptional South African craftsmanship while reducing transport distances and our environmental footprint. We wanted spirits with a genuine connection to Mhondoro and Welgevonden, and a story our guests can take home. It is a collection we are proud to put our name to.”
The launch of Sterkstroom further strengthens Mhondoro's commitment to delivering experiences that are rooted in place, giving guests yet another way to connect with the landscapes, flavours and stories that make Welgevonden unique.
